Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Chaplin's tramp character on film in 1914. These short comedies recreate the mean streets of Chaplin's London youth and focus on the Tramp in his natural habitat, as impoverished and homeless, as Chaplin deepens his ability to express tragedy as comedy, as the Tramp becomes a universal symbol of the dispossessed: Police (1916; 26 Minutes), and Easy Street (1917; 24 minutes), with live piano accompaniment by Makia Matsumura; and A Dog’s Life (1918; 35 minutes), with music composed by Chaplin on the soundtrack. Films directed by Chaplin. Hosted and curated by Ken Gordon. Children under 6 will not be admitted.
