Event description: An exhibit of new work by renowned Japanese artist Misaki Kawai, the first solo presentation of Kawai's work in the U.S. since 2007.

Utilizing painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, artist books and zines, animation, and video, Kawai's work transforms CMA's 2,000-square-foot gallery into an imaginary world of giant fuzzy animals and other colorful characters.

Known for her whimsical style and colorful depictions, Kawai's past installations have included an earth-themed amusement park in outer space, a towering treehouse for glam rockers, a beach party with surfers riding a gigantic wave, and a fleet of airplanes carrying rock bands from the 1960s.

As a CMA artist-in-residence, Kawai will welcome young artists enrolled in CMA classes to take studio tours, participate in master classes, and observe her at work. The exhibition will encourage both adults and young artists to make art by emphasizing that the ability to trust one's instincts is the most important trait for artists to possess, not technical skill. This philosophy stems from Kawai's own approach to art making, which is connected to the concept of "heta-uma," a Japanese manga style that is considered "nave" or "amateurish" but produces a successful result through the artist's intuitive powers of expression.
