Everyday, all around us, there are different movements of energy taking place. In some cases, if the energy is moving fast enough through a medium of air or water and applying enough pressure, it can form a vibration. The movement or vibration of particles produces waves of sound called sound waves. The distance between those sound waves are called wavelengths. The wavelength of sound waves are regulated by frequencies. Therefore, the higher the frequency or pitch, the shorter the wavelength.
This outdoor workshop will explore instrumental music through the science of wavelengths, vibration and sound. Participants will learn how to create instruments out of household objects, tour the museum, listen to pieces made by musicians of color and have fun playing a water xylophone.
