On the Classic Mansion Tour in late September and throughout October, you will see the majestic vestibule and entrance hall, reception room, parlor, library, and the sumptuous Victorian dining room – all decorated with trimmings for the Autumn season! The second floor, which centers around the grand Picture Gallery, is not decorated and visitors can see those spaces in all their traditional splendor. For those wanting to just see the mansion, hear the history, and take in the beautiful seasonal decorations, this is the better option than the more explicitly Halloween themed theatrical nighttime performances. The focus of the guided Classic tour is the history of the families who lived at Lyndhurst as well as the many Gothic Revival furnishings and collections we bring out of storage and display during October only. These tours are appropriate for children of all ages.

Overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, is Lyndhurst, one of America’s finest Gothic Revival mansions. The architectural brilliance of the residence, designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, is complemented by the park-like landscape of the estate and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts. Its noteworthy occupants included: former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt and railroad tycoon Jay Gould.
The grounds at Lyndhurst survive as an outstanding example of 19th century landscape design. Elements include sweeping lawns accented with shrubs and specimen trees, the curving entrance drive revealing “surprise” views, the angular repetition of the Gothic roofline in the evergreens, and the nation’s first steel-framed conservatory. The rose garden and fernery are later additions.
