Event description: Marc Chagall is a major exhibition that includes a significant selection of about half of Chagall’s 1957 series of hand-colored etchings of Bible stories, a series never before seen on Long Island. The exhibition portrays this important and loved artist as a storyteller, demonstrating how Chagall, throughout a long and distinguished career, incorporated facets of his early Russian-Jewish heritage into multilayered works. Chagall’s storytelling paintings portray a fantastic pictorial world where heaven and earth seem to meet. It’s a world where people and animals—cows, goats, donkeys, horses and birds—float upside down or sideways, irrespective of the laws of gravity, and couples are always in love. Chagall’s hypersensitive imagination is palpable as he shares with the viewer his memories of family in brilliantly colored works set amidst the houses and streets of his native Vitebsk. The exhibition runs through November 4, 2012.

About Nassau County Museum of Art

Ranked among the nation's largest, most important suburban art museums, Nassau County Museum of Art is located about 25 miles east of New York City in Roslyn Harbor, Long Island, on the former Frick Estate, in the heart of Long Island's fabled Gold Coast. The main museum building, named in honor of art collectors and philanthropists Arnold and Joan Saltzman, is a three-story Georgian mansion that exemplifies Gold Coast architecture of the late 19th century.

In addition to the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art building, Nassau County Museum of Art includes the Sculpture Park, Formal Garden of historic importance, the Pinetum, an architecturally-significant restored trellis, rare specimen trees, and marked walking trails.
