Event description: Exhibitions on Kuba textiles have been few. Fewer still have examined the tradition of splendid, long Kuba skirts and overskirts; and none have drawn upon the two great early collections of the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, and the William Henry Sheppard collection at Hampton University, Virginia, that provide textiles of documented date and provenance.

Kuba Textiles: Geometry in Form, Space, and Time will, for the first time, bring together unique holdings in this field and contrast documented early Kuba textiles with textiles attributed to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The exhibition will lay the foundation of a standard of comparison and historical trajectory for an in-depth evaluation of Kuba textiles. It will establish a cultural context, and illustrate the continued presence and visual language of Kuba design beyond the Kingdom of the Kuba in the twentieth century.

The exhibition will feature approximately eighty pieces, including approximately thirty-two splendid skirts and overskirts, textiles that range in length from a 48-inch fragment to a 356-inch full skirt. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, with essays by curator Marie-Therese Brincard; Dr. Patricia Darish, independent scholar; Dr. Christraud Geary, Teel Senior Curator of African and Oceanic Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Christina Giuntini, conservator, Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Dr. Verena Traeger, University of Vienna; and Dr. Julien Volper, Associate Curator, Musee Royal de l'Afrique Centrale Tervuren. Organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art of Purchase College, SUNY, and curated by Consultant Curator for the African Collection, Marie-Therese Brincard.
