$20; $10 children younger than 13

Event description: Based on the 1820 story by Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1997) tells the plight of the schoolteacher, Ichabod Crane, who gives singing lessons to young women in the Dutch community of Tarrytown, New York during the early 19th Century. Ichabod is a figure of fun and has little in common with the townsfolk, except for their belief in ghosts and spirits especially the fearful Headless Horseman, who threatens travelers at night in a nearby glen called Sleepy Hollow. Poor Ichabod courts Katrina, the daughter of a rich farmer. This sparks the jealousy of the town mischief-maker, Brom Bones. One night, Ichabod is chased by the Headless Horseman and mysteriously disappears. Brom Bones marries Katrina while the townsfolk debate Ichabods fate was he taken away by spirits or scared away by more logical causes, perhaps even by Brom Bones? A perfectly scary family opera in time for Halloween!

About Sands Point Preserve

In the early 20th century, Sands Point Preserve was the home of the Guggenheim family. The buildings on the estate are monuments to the opulent lifestyle for which Long Island’s North Shore is known.

The 216-acre Sands Point Preserve is an interesting mixture of natural and landscaped areas. Diverse natural habitats for a variety of plants and animals are supported on the the Preserve including mature forest, woodlands, fields, meadows, a freshwater pond, glacial cliffs and shoreline on the Long Island Sound.

Visitors are welcome to stroll, hike, jog and/or run on the six marked trails through the woods, around the pond, and along the beach. Trail maps and schedule of guided nature walks are available at the Gatehouse.
