Journey back in time to 1874 to visit Schneider’s Saloon in the basement of 97 Orchard Street, located in the heart of “Little Germany.” Like on the Shop Life building tour, you will meet an actor playing either John or Caroline Schneider who will show you their home and business, tell you about their community, and share how the saloon is faring with competition and outside efforts to regulate the industry. You will see how running a business in 1874 was quite different from today, and explore the role community plays in helping newcomers build lives in new places — an experience as relevant today as it was in the 1870s. Throughout the program, participants will have a chance to ask their own questions and interact with John or Caroline. Advanced registration required.
