School Bus Safety Forum at The New School Starr Foundation Hall,

Event description:

Above all else, safety is the most important goal for transporting students to and from school. Our School Bus Safety Forum will address new innovations to protect the 150,000 New York City students who rely on school buses every day. This event will examine the potential use of stop-arm cameras, GPS tracking, and other tools to build a 21st century school safety ecosystem. Join us to learn about the present and future of school bus safety in New York City. Keynote Address: Jean Souliere, CEO, BusPatrol School Bus Safety Programs and Initiatives Approximately 150,000 New York City students take a school bus every day. These young New Yorkers rely on the Department of Education, bus companies, and more to consistently deliver a safe and quick ride to school. As families have raised concerns about this process, stakeholders have proposed and implemented a variety of solutions to better protect students and keep parents more informed. Our panelists will discuss new innovations, such as the use of stop-arm cameras, GPS tracking, and other legislative and regulatory tools to build a 21st century school safety ecosystem. Speakers: Jillian Jorgensen, Education Reporter, NY1 (moderator) New York City Councilman Ben Kallos, Sponsor of stop-arm camera legislation New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, Chairman, Committee on Transportation New York City Councilman Mark Treyger, Chairman, Committee on Education Nassau Legislator Siela Bynoe, Sponsor of stop-arm camera legislation Eileen Napolitano,Trustee, East Meadow School Board Stop-Arm Cameras: The Key to Slowing Down Illegal Bus Passes According to a recent study, over 50,000 drivers across New York State illegally pass a stopped school bus every day. This sobering statistic highlights the real risk students face and a nightmare for parents. Recent legislation passed in Albany allows school districts and municipalities to adopt stop-arm camera enforcement programs to identify, track and fine motorists that illegally pass stopped school buses during drop-off and pick-up. The New York City Council has proposed legislation that would require every school bus in the city to be equipped with stop-arm cameras. Panelists will discuss this proposal and the potential for it to dramatically improve the safety of the hundreds of thousands of children who rely on school buses to get to school and back home each day. Speakers: Clayton Guse, Transit Reporter, New York Daily News (moderator) Allison Blanchette, Executive Director, Long Island Streets Cynthia Brown, Executive Director, New York City Coalition for Transportation Safety Eric McClure, Executive Director, StreetsPAC Corey Muirhead, President, New York School Bus Contractors Association
