Event description: Enjoy some high-flying fun at The Science Barge Season Opening. The Science Barge, an award-winning, internationally recognized program of Groundwork Hudson Valley, will celebrate the American eel on opening day, Saturday, April 13 on the Hudson River waterfront in downtown Yonkers. Activities will include kite-flying, hunting for glass eels, build-a-boat, riding the Energy Bike to power light bulbs, and potting a hydroponic plant to take home. Enjoy lively music, cookies, and juice. Free walk-on tours will be offered from 2-6pm.

The Science Barge, which operates as an environmental education center, is a sustainable urban farm powered by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels, and irrigated by rainwater. It is located at 99 Dock Street, Yonkers, NY 10701.

The Science Barge is a prototype sustainable urban farm developed by NY Sun Works and acquired by Groundwork Hudson Valley in October 2008 to be operated as an environmental education center. The Science Barge greenhouse, floating on the Hudson River, grows an abundance of fresh produce including tomatoes, melons, popcorn, peppers, eggplant, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff. All of the energy needed to power the Barge is generated by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels while the hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected rainwater and purified river water, thus operating completely “off the grid.” It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York. It is now docked in downtown Yonkers just north of the Yonkers Pier. The Science Barge is open to the public on the weekends from 12-6pm. The Science Barge is also open for weekday educational programs and field trips for schools, camps, and other groups from mid-April through the beginning of November. Programs range from 1-3 hours and cost $200-$475. We are currently scheduling field trips for the summer and fall!
