Walt Whitman was born in the back bedroom of the Birthplace house in 1819. Built by his father circa 1810, the farmhouse is an excellent example of native Long Island craftsmanship. The Birthplace site consists of 1.5 landscaped acres and is a New York State Historic Site, listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. In the modern Interpretive Center visitors view exhibits, such as, a wall of 130 photos of Whitman, a 19th century printing press (a replica of the one used by Whitman) and hear a recording of Walt's voice reading his poem, "America."
