Westbeth Center for the Arts
Tween, Teen, Adult
As featured artists of the 2012 PEN World Voices Festival, PAW leads free drop-in workshops to create giant puppets and other visual elements for mobile performances on NYC's spectacular High Line. In this workshop, staff and students will translate the sensual anatomy of books, bindings, folios, paper, and print into bibliomorphic puppets and performing objects that officially open the Festival with a Parade of Illuminations on April 30 at dusk. On subsequent Festival evenings, roving performances of Ex Libris will inhabit the Highline, leaving behind PEN-authored texts in the hands of a few lucky passers-by.
The workshops run April 21-May 2 at the Westbeth Center for the Arts. No experience is necessary and older kids are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Staff will introduce participants to techniques in large-scale puppetry, illuminated structures, paper-casting, low-tech printmaking, and "altered books," ultimately offering the opportunity to bring the students' creations to life on The High Line.
