PRESCHOOL

82nd Street Academics

Our Distinctive Approach

Life is race and it starts early. The happiest and most successful children run the race with confidence, eager to try out the next skill and use their curiosity. An excellent Preschool helps parents in the task of guiding their child wisely.

82nd Street Academics provides a Preschool program which offers a gentle introduction to school life. The program develops students’ pre-math and pre-literacy skills, and engages young minds through arts and music, gross-and fine-motor activities, and fosters social-emotional development.

At 82nd Street Academics, we incorporate these four learning domains throughout each daily activity. Children explore their individual interests in classroom centers, which include blocks, dramatic play, manipulative toys, sand and water, and art. They will also engage in group activities such as gross motor time, read-aloud, outdoor science exploration, cooking, singing, and daily discussions. We emphasize physical activity. Children have active play opportunities every day in The Learning Park or indoors in the classroom. Our schedule allows children time to be independent by playing alone, to make friends by working in small groups, and to build a community in the classroom through whole group activities.

Teachers observe and evaluate children to find out more about their interests, which are the basis for classroom themes and activities. This keeps students motivated and engaged in child-centered learning. At 82nd Street Academics, our staff is committed to building a strong partnership with your entire family to give your child the best learning experience possible!

For many children, Preschool is the first experience within a group setting.  At 82nd Street Academics, we provide children with a positive, first educational experience that lays a strong foundation for future development.

UPK

82nd Street Academics

Our Distinctive Approach

At 82nd Street Academics, our Universal Pre-Kindergarten or UPK program provides children with positive early education experiences that invite students to develop a love for learning. While many of our educational practices are similar to other quality schools, we also have three beliefs about childhood development.

1) Our approach with our families is to develop a partnership in our program where parents can fully participate in the learning process of their children. All of our classrooms are equipped with cameras and audio capabilities so that parents can keep track of daily activities and be reassured that their child is in a safe environment where we are delivering on our program promises. If questions or concerns do arise, our teachers answer their emails daily and turnaround initial responses within 24 hours. Additionally, our teachers send out daily emails to inform parents about that day’s classroom activities and what steps parents can take at home to reinforce what was learned. We also encourage all of our parents to volunteer in the classroom. These volunteer opportunities can be coordinated with the lead teacher once the school year begins.

2) With each student in our program, we are trying to develop not just purely academic skills, but also areas such as social-emotional health, physical development, language & literacy development, and mathematical/cognitive thinking. Our whole child approach is driven by adaptive, teacher-written lesson plans which incorporates multiple domains of learning and is checked and approved by our Early Childhood Program Director. Using these multiple domains of learning, we are able to better individualize each child’s instruction and experience in our program.

3) To measure each domain and properly assess our students, we use a Department of Education accredited measurement system which includes observation and evaluation of each student over a several month period. Once we finalize our results, we can then offer students balanced sub-groups to improve areas in which they need development and to allow for our teachers and student peers to aid in this growth process.

Through play, children learn to use symbols, developing their capacity to understand abstract ideas. We incorporate these learning domains throughout each daily activity.

Parent Review

“We have had a great experience at 82nd Street Academics. I graduated from 82nd Street Academics about 20 years ago myself and always knew that when I had kids of my own, this is exactly where I would want them to go. The teachers and staff are amazing and I knew my son would be successful after going to this school. We love 82nd Street Academics!” -Joyce, Mother of Jamian in UPK Room 3.

K- 8 Summer School

82nd Street Academics

Our Distinctive Approach

Do you want your child at the head of the class in September? Are you worried about summer programs that bore children instead of using their curiosity to give them energy for study? Do you think kids should have summer fun mixed with learning? Summer School at 82nd Street Academics is the best option if you answered yes!

There are many options for Summer Programs. We are the best choice for families who want their child to get to the head of the class, want their child to develop a love for learning, and want their child to have some summer fun.

FACT 1: Most students start the Fall school term trying to remember what happened in the year before. Some studies show that new learning starts for most students in November, just before Thanksgiving. Our Academic morning program prepares students for the next grade and keeps their skills sharp. Our students start the Fall at the head of the class while others are struggling to get started.

FACT 2: Students learn best when they want to learn. Our summer theme, field trips to support the theme and afternoon projects to support the theme, stimulate child curiosity. Students volunteer to put in the work to get the afternoon projects done.

FACT 3: The mix of spirit rallies and fun customs and plenty of physical exercise on the two playgrounds is irresistible. The laughter, running, and games improves energy for study and recharges energy after a tough project.

AFTER SCHOOL ACHEIVEMENT CLUB (K-5 grades)

82nd Street Academics

Thousands of parents turn to After School choices when their student is not getting all the services that they need to flourish. We hear many of these concerns at 82nd Street Academics and have shaped our programs around three parent questions that are most frequent.

  1. How can I find a safe After School program while I work?

Home Day Care is a popular option after school. A kindly mother is home and offers to pick up your child as well as her own. Unfortunately, those good intentions lead many families to unpleasant consequences. Electrical extension cords, blocked exits, and all the other problems of unlicensed are never considered until its too late. Most school age home day care providers are sincere people who never considered safety issues that are basic to any licensed center.

   2. How can my child get their homework done and corrected and do better in school?

The sad truth is that New York City generally has excellent teachers and principals but twice as many students as they can handle. With student:teacher ratios ranging from  25:1 – 40:1, public schools labor to do too much with too little. After School programs often ignore academic development. It’s understandable because no one expects After School programs to hire certified teachers or simply expand the school day. Meanwhile, homework continues to increase as teachers labor to prepare students for NYS exams. Parents end up with a dilemma.

SOLUTION: CLICK HERE

  3. I want more Enrichment after school and organized play instead of coming home to computer and TV.

Many parents want their child to experience enrichment and fun after school. Some parents are working and need a quality experience and other parents have seen students power down at home and want something more productive.

Research also shows that

  • Students without periods of play, physical activity, and the arts – those students also perform lower academically. Humans are built to combine creativity and discovery and that balance of art and learning has to be maintained.
  • We see from Howard Gardner’s 7 intelligences that children who do not learn in mathematical or reading intelligences are less likely to be served by public education. Those same children may excel in those ways if they use music, art, dance, or physical activity as a doorway. A child who loves art may suddenly want to know the biography of a favorite artist which is a doorway to literacy.
  • Since the goal of After School should be high school preparation (and college beyond), the arts are a valuable way in which students feel and study their emotions and those of others. Drama is only one example of an activity that combines art with emotion.
