Triumphant Journeys, which offers individualized life coaching, now offers coaching certification programs for educators. The new programs, Coaching for Successful Schools (for Principals and School Directors) and Coaching for Student Success (for Teachers) will start this month, allowing educators the opportunity to receive coaching certificates through Brooklyn College’s Professional Advancement and Continuing Education (PACE) Program.

These new programs are month-long training courses that comprise four Sunday classes. The Coaching for Successful Schools course focuses on strengthening administrators’ communication and leadership skills so they can help staff members achieve positive change and teachers be more effective educators. The Coaching for Student Success course focuses on strengthening teachers’ communication skills so they can help their students achieve greater success. “Coaching skills can enhance communications up, down, and across organizational lines to build teams and resolve conflicts,” says Chaya Abelsky, owner of Triumphant Journeys and a certified life coach.

Each course includes a full session of role-playing, with professional actors playing the role of teachers or students in difficult situations, so that educators can practice what they have learned and consolidate their new skills.

Registration is now open for November classes, which will be held on the Brooklyn College campus. For more information: call 347-240-8899 or email [email protected].

New York Guitar Academy, a local school that teaches acoustic, electric, and classical guitar to adults and children, opened a new location in Park Slope in July. The school offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes for all ages that expose students to many different types of music. The new location also features certified instructors who specialize in flamenco guitar.

Every six to eight weeks, students perform a guitar recital at a local space, where they can display their new skills for family and friends.

“We love these shows. It gives our students more incentive, knowing that they will get to prepare a song to perform,” says Elyse Hochman, who co-owns the academy with her husband. Hochman adds that the school’s goal is to develop a sense of community among students and foster an appreciation for the arts through lessons.

Classes are offered in either small group or individual sessions. Adults have the option of setting up live video online lessons through Skype or Google Video Chat. A kids’ special is offered at $22.75 for four weeks of classes, and a discount is offered to students who recommend others to the school.

New York Guitar Academy is located at 506 5th Avenue, 2nd Floor. For more information, call 646-539-1390 or 646-539-1391.
