Weekly Web Round-Up: Week of August 31, 2012

It’s the last day of August, and we still can’t believe how quickly this summer flew by! We hope you relax and enjoy the long weekend before your kids’ school and after-school schedules become too hectic!

How was your experience with back-to-school shopping this year? Hopefully it wasn’t too stressful or chaotic. Nick Momposted this gem of a mother live tweeting her shopping trip.

With fall so close (Sept. 22 to be exact), we can’t help but to be reminded of apple-picking season. A Day in Mollywood’s Molly recently went apple picking with her husband and two sons. Check out her blog to see more great photos from their adventure. While you’re at it, check out our list to find some great apple orchards in your area to pick your own apples!

Jerry Nelson, the voice of beloved Sesame Street‘s Count von Count, recently passed away in his home on Cape Cod. Jessica Lahey, a middle school teacher and education blogger for the New York Times’ Motherlode, remembers Nelson as her “dear friend and teacher.”

Earlier this year, I wrote an article about teaching middle school, about the happiness I find in the classroom and in the education of my students. Jerry Nelson commented on the piece the same day it was published. I treasure his words personally, but they’re also a reflection of how well he recognized the power of teaching:

“I wonder if I would have realized how lucky I was, had I been fortunate enough to have had you as a teacher. The only teacher I remember with fondness is Mrs Raglann, who taught us about Mozart, minuets and Beethoven in the third grade.”

Jerry Nelson understood how lucky he was to count Mrs. Raglann among his teachers, and here’s hoping we never forget to count Jerry Nelson among ours.

Have you seen this totally adorable video of twin 1-year-olds dancing to their dad playing his guitar? It was posted earlier this month to YouTube, but has only recently become viral. We think you should definitely watch it.
